Why do writers need to retreat?
Writing is hard; it makes sense why we procrastinate in doing it. It takes a special kind of headspace that’s difficult to access with small-writing windows sprinkled throughout the week. Even writing a blog post takes a solid amount of time and concentration. Fiction is another animal, it blows my mind how much time it takes to sink into my world and a full-day retreat is a requirement for me to really get to know my characters and landscape so that I can work with them more sporadically later.
“Only writers feel a pang of jealousy at the thought of a solo-writing day. ”
I need that time and space to follow my creative ideas without interruption. It’s more socially acceptable to leave children, husband, dog, and home responsibilities for a wedding, destination birthday, etc. Only writers feel a pang of jealousy at the thought of a solo-writing day. Taking the time for our art with no monetary return takes a bit of rebellion against societal normalcies and a lot of belief in yourself. You must believe that your work is important, no one else can do it for you. I encourage you to take a day for your writing, maybe even get a room for the night so you can write into the night.
Are you free all-day on March 28, 2020? Email me to inquire about a writing day that I’ve created for us! More info here.
